What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

By Sam Monem · MonemTech

Not long ago, “getting found online” meant ranking on Google. Today, more and more of your customers skip the list of links entirely. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity a direct question — “who’s the best dermatologist near me?”, “what’s a good ERP for a small retailer?” — and they trust the answer they get back. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is how you make sure that answer includes you.

The short version

AEO is the practice of structuring your website and content so AI assistants can find your business, trust your information, and recommend you when someone asks a relevant question. Instead of competing for a blue link in a list, you’re competing to be the answer.

One sentence to remember: SEO helps you rank; AEO helps you get recommended.

Why this is happening now

AI assistants don’t read the web the way a person browsing does. They rely on clear, structured signals to decide who’s trustworthy enough to name. When those signals are strong, the engine can confidently say your name. When they’re missing or muddled, it plays it safe and names a competitor it understands better — even if you’re the better business.

That’s the opportunity. Most businesses haven’t adapted yet, so the bar to stand out is still surprisingly low.

How AEO differs from traditional SEO

They overlap, but the emphasis shifts:

• SEO optimizes to rank a page in a list of results. It cares a lot about keywords, links, and page speed.
• AEO optimizes to be cited inside an answer. It leans harder on structured data (schema), clear factual statements, and being a source the AI considers trustworthy.

The good news: the foundations of good AEO — clean content, accurate structured data, real expertise on the page — tend to improve your classic SEO too. You’re rarely choosing one over the other.

Where to start

You don’t need to boil the ocean. Three high-impact moves:

1. See how AI answers for you today. Ask the engines your customers use the questions your customers ask, and note where you appear (and where a competitor does instead).
2. Add the structured data that tells machines who you are, what you do, and why you’re credible.
3. Write answer-ready content for the real questions buyers ask — clear, factual, and easy to quote.

Common questions

Is AEO replacing SEO? No — it’s adding to it. The strongest foundations serve both, so good AEO usually lifts your SEO too.

Do I need AEO if I’m a small local business? Often even more so. People ask AI for local recommendations constantly, and few small businesses have optimized for it — which makes getting it right a cheap way to stand out.
